Eagle's Minimal Essential Medium (EMEM) was developed by Harry Eagle (1959) as a basic medium for the growth of mammalian cells. It contains essential amino acids, vitamins, salts, and glucose, which cells need for their metabolism and growth. It provides a high-quality basis for the cultivation of a very wide range of human and animal cell lines.

This EMEM is a powder medium and was supplemented with non essential amino acids (NEAA) and Hank's salts. It contains L-glutamine.
